The Dharma Initiative

It’s almost been a week and today I got the day off. I’ve had time to adjust to the altitude, my routine here and this is all I’ve been thinking of.

Do you know the show LOST? It’s one of my favorites and in the show some of the characters belong to this thing called the Dharma Initiative. It’s a mellow, hippie commune out in the middle of nowhere; operating for the greater good. Let’s just say, if I had a Dharma jumpsuit, I’d be set.

Things really slowing down gives you time to think and I’m thinking that these vacations I choose have a common thread. It’s the “throwing myself into totally foreign situations just to see how I’d react” thread. Spain was like that and today I realize that this temple excursion is exactly like that. The kicker is that I don’t seem to realize this until a week into the vacation – like right now.

I guess it works that way, cause if I actually had time to think about it, I probably wouldn’t do it. Right now, I’m offcially in Dharma camp.

My first day had its adjustments. A nice girl showed me her painting of a cow prancing through a field with OMMMMM over it. “Did you see our OMMMM cow?” she asked. I did and ended up saying “You know, if you put a couple more O’s on it and flipped it around it’d say “MOO”. Followed that up with saying it had an upside down McDonald’s sign on it’s butt which is actually the symbol for Om. Not exactly what a Dharma kid wants to hear. You know that the symbol for cheap processed industrialized meat is on their OMMMMM cow. Strike one.

Next foot in the mouth situation was when I was being shown to my very nice temporary room. I asked about the room lock when I got a strange look. After realizing what kind of comment I made, I shrugged and said “Oh yeah, I guess stealing at a Buddhist compound would probably be frowned upon.” Strike TWO!

The most recent one was when I sat in a ceremony at the temple the other night. All the girls had these long maroon skirts that they were wearing to it. I was in my painting jeans and messy t-shirt but no skirt. At this point, I knew there was no getting out of the ceremony, even sans skirt so I just did what I do best, make it work. Grabbing the nearest maroon tablecloth, I wrapped it around my waist; tucked it into my pants. “Uh, do I have to take off my pants?” I kindly asked my friend. She looked at the makeshift skirt with disbelief and said no. Good thing cause I wasn’t wearing any underwear and the last thing I wanted to do was flash a couple of Lamas during a religious ceremony in a temple.

So I’m getting my bearings slowly. Trying to find water but it’s about 5 miles away walking distance which I may get desperate enough to walk there just to hear and feel it. It is beautiful in this area though. Mountains and trees as far as the eye can see. There is a calmness to this place and when I paint, I feel like I am in a meditative state accompanied by a huge temple which is why I planned this whole trip anyway. That and to learn some old school Tibetan art skills which will hopefully happen on Thursday when the Lama returns.

In the meantime, getting to know the ropes. Learning to stay still and take in what this place has to offer, exactly what I had to do last year in Spain. There must be a method to this madness. Let’s just hope that I don’t moon anyone important.

Sensory Item o' the Day

So right in the thick of it. We gotta get things primed and finished before the Lama comes back on Tuesday. Then it's design time.

Been sleeping better than I have in the last few months. And this veggie food is REALLY good. I never knew it could taste so good but let's be honest...If someone is cooking me food three times a day, I'm happy.

Yesterday we had the monks chanting while painting; today it was a storm. The wind starts howling in the afternoon and at times it sounds like a tornado siren. Right when it really got going we heard a BOOM. Roaring thunder and rain. It felt cocoon-like working in the middle of the Temple. So safe, warm. What a backdrop to work in.

Looking forward to exploring the land a bit more once we get the work done.

Temple Time

So after arriving at the Durango airport, I had no clue who was picking me up. Just as I was reaching towards the ATM to grab some cash a girl named Lis said "Are you Penny?". She jumped up and down when I said yes and we rolled out to her car.

When I saw the Illinois plates I asked her where she was from. Chicago it seemed and she ended up out here after leaving the city for a road trip in search of a new home. Hmm, that sounds familiar.

As we got to talking I found out she worked for the Modern Contemporary Art museum in Chicago. This was a place I desperately tried to get a job from while I was there. As I thought about it, her name and voice sounded really familiar. I'm pretty sure I talked to her sometime in the job search process. I loved this one photography exhibit I saw there that summer and found out that she hung it and got to know the artist well. She told me if I ever wanted a job she could help get me one but now I'm just happy right where I am.

So we drive on and stop at the Pagosa Springs Safeway for some supplies. In this case, meat. Lis is craving it and says at a point tells me the veggie diet doesn't totally cut it. Oh Thank God! I find out that many of the residents at Tara Mandala go into town for burgers, beers and occasionally a trip to the hot springs where Tuesday is "local nite".

The lama is out of town right now but will be back on Tuesday. It seems everyone needed a break after this big celebration they had last week. Lis and I will be prepping the altar for the painting design the Lama will put on it. He'll meditate on what it should be and then start drawing.

Already, I'm learning how he does this as Lis describes the stenciling that takes place with powder and how some of the dimensional pieces are done with woodfiller through a contraption that consists of a pencil and rubberband. Today we're making Rabbit Skin glue which is a Tibetan gesso of sorts used for the mineral paints. This Lama has a school in Santa Fe and has been described as really funny. Can't wait to meet him.

The altitude has been affecting my brain or maybe it's the overload of visiting the past. I'm a bit fuzzy the day I arrive but I do note the "Pavement Ends" sign on the way into the region I'm calling home for the next few weeks. It feels in many ways, so true as I close my eyes right as we run out of road.

I'm not sure what to make of this place except the people are really nice. There's a floating mix of people who just decided to come here. There are all different types and most have done some really cool things. Lis found this place while stopping in Pagosa for a meal. She's been here two months now and may open a painting business with the Lama in Santa Fe.

In my haze yesterday, something really cool happened. At the end of our day while we were prepping the altar doors, a couple monks came in and started practicing in the room. The chanting while we worked on things to paint was amazing. Exactly what I wanted and it all finally made sense.

Denver Catch Up

Good times hangin' with the Barclays. Got my Denver catch up them and the rest of the crew at a BBQ thrown by the Barclays. Revisited some old haunts and hung out in Boulder for a bit.

After being in Key West for the year, I was a bit thrown off by the roads, cars, stores everywhere and got lost a bunch of times.

Margo and Ella are mini versions of their parents and it was fun to watch them and the rest of the kids. In addition to fun times with Steph and Dave, got to hang with Rob H and have a beer or two in the hipster hideout Forest Room 5.

Off to Colorado

Got my last licks of Key West in before I head out to Colorado today. Everyone needs a vacation, even us Key Westers.

It's time to connect with old friends and explore new territories!!
